Sigiri, on High Street Northcote is one of the few authentic Sri Lankan restaurants in Melbourne and is highly popular throughout the community. Sigiri offers a diverse and creative menu infused with many delightful aromas, passed through the centuries, with culinary influences from the Portugese, Dutch, English, South Indian and Malay. The flavoursome curries are packed full of zesty flavours and delicately roasted spices.
This family run restaurant exudes a cosy & warm ambience with a friendly welcome for all. Sigiri, which means "Lions Rock" in Lankanese, is world famous as one of the wonders of the world and one of Sri Lanka's most historical sights. You can enjoy many of these artefacts' on the walls of Sigiri as you taste the delicious flavours of their unique cuisine.
The cuisine is traditional, start with the hopper (traditional bread which is made fresh upon ordering) with Sini Sambul, a caramelized onion with Maldive fish & tamarind. One of the main dishes worth trying is Buryani meal, spicy rice served with chicken curry, boiled egg, mint samba, eggplant, raiti & Simi Sambul. This dish is normally created for special occasions due to the skill & time required to prepare.
One of the features is they offer 90% of their menu GLUTEN FREE. Customers come from all over Melbourne to Sigiri to partake of their GLUTEN FREE options.
To enjoy true Sri Lankan Cuisine their are a number of exquisite dishes to try. Entrees are varied with a large range of vegetarian, fish, chicken and beef. Main courses are equally varied, with a similar range of vegetarian, beef and chicken. There are for instance 6 fish options. Sigiri also uses Halal meat in all dishes.
Sweets are a delight such as traditional Pani Appa-sweet hopper served with banana. Rupalatha has been cooking at Sigiri for nearly 10 years using traditional Sri Lankan recipes. This restaurant is most definitely a true Sri Lankan eating experience. The prices are surprisingly affordable considering the quality of food and preparation time.
Complement your meal with a range of beers including Sri Lankan beers. Also worth trying are their home made non-alcoholic drinks such as Divul, a wood apple cream with milk and ice cream, or Faruda which is sherbet syrup milk, kasa kasa and ice cream.
