About Battery Point

Battery Point is Hobart's most historic suburb, and is located a short walk from Salamanca Place. Access from the waterfront is via Kelly's Steps. Battery Point retains much of the character of a Cornish fishing village from last century. The suburb was initially a home for sailors and other maritime workers who plied their trade out of Hobart Town. The suburb today is still mainly a residential area.

Arthurs Circus is a ring of old cottages surrounding the old village green at the heart of Battery Point. The area has a number of tearooms and restaurants, antique shops and, of course, pubs.

The Tasmanian Maritime Museum, Secheron, is located in Battery Point, as is the Colonial Museum, Narranya, which exhibits items from everyday 19th century life in Hobart. Angelsea Barracks, built in 1811 is still used by the army. The barracks are the oldest military establishment in Australia, and houses the Military Museum of Australia. Guided tours of restored buildings and grounds are available.

St. George's Anglican Church (1836), which sits atop the hill and can be seen from other Hobart suburbs, is located in Battery Point. Many of the homes in Battery Point are classified by the National Trust, which conducts walking tours of the area on Saturday mornings.
