Cairns is the unofficial capital of Tropical North QLD. A modern city, it is situated on the shores of Trinity Inlet with a backdrop of rugged mountains covered with tropical rainforest. The city has a wide variety of restaurants and accommodation to suit all budgets and tastes. North of Cairns, Port Douglas is also renowned for its top class restaurants. Inland the Atherton Tablelands lure many visitors each year with their Jungle-fringed volcanic crater lakes, waterfalls and fertile farmlands, coupled with the only temperate climate in the Australian tropics. North of the Daintree, Cape York & Gulf Country is one of the world's last accessible wilderness areas. Known as Australia’s last frontier, it remains a land of few people and prolific wildlife.

When to Visit Tropical North Queensland

Summers in Tropical North Queensland are typicallly hot and wet. The highest rainfall tends to be recorded during the period from January to March, with average rainfall of over 400mm. The Wet season is officially between November and April (Average Temperature 23 - 31 degrees C./Average Rainfall 287mm). The best time to visit is in the Dry Season, from May to October when rainfall is lower and temperatures average around 27 degrees C., (Average Temperature 19 – 27 degrees C. / Average Rainfall 47mm).

Getting Around Tropical North Queensland

Cairns is the main center of the Tropical North. Cairns airport is located 7km north of the Cairns CBD. Other smaller airfields throughout the region are accessible from here. Travel in Tropical north Queensland can mean huge distances. Getting around within the city area of Cairns and along the East Coast is easy due to the short travel distances and an abundance of public transport. There are numerous tours available in the area, offering everything from half day city tours to several day adventure trips to the more remote areas of this fascinating region. Many people like to hire a car and tour at their own pace - it's a great way to get to the places where the organised tours don't go.
