When to Visit Fraser Coast/South Burnett
The Fraser Coast – South Burnet has a hot and humid climate, cooled by sea breezes. While the summer maximum average temperature is 30 degrees C, the summer months have some extremely hot days. Average temperatures of around 15 degrees C are usual in winter. Most winter days are mild, dry and sunny, however the night time temperatures can drop – especially in the South Burnett Valley.
Getting Around Fraser Coast/South Burnett
The Fraser Coast – South Burnett is approximately a three and a half hour drive north of Brisbane. There are direct flights from Sydney and Brisbane to the Fraser Coast. Queensland Rail operates regular services from Brisbane, Rockhampton and Cairns into Maryborough West. Bus transfers are available. Daily coach services travel through Maryborough, Hervey Bay and Childers from Cairns and Agnes Water and everywhere in between. There are also direct express coaches from Brisbane with some pick ups at Brisbane Airport. Fraser Island itself can be accessed by ferry from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach or air charters departing from Harvey Bay Airport. Once you are there a Four Wheel Drive vehicle is essential - all roads are sand tracks! Take your own vehicle, hire one from any one of the surrounding towns on the mainland, or jump on a tour. One, two, and three-day escorted 4WD tours depart daily from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. All vehciles must have a Vehicle Permit to arrive on Fraser Island.
