About Mataranka Thermal Springs

Situated an hour south-east of Katherine is the township of Mataranka and its thermal pool. Situated on the upper reaches of the Roper River, the crystal clear water of the thermal pool is surrounded by lush tropical forest and Elsey National Park.

The serene Roper River meanders through scenic Elsey National Park, situated a short distance from Mataranka. Numerous springs within the park feed the Roper River which, during April to September, flow gently through large waterholes and then tumbles over rocks and 'tufa' dams. During October to March, floodwaters cause the river to swell and rage on its journey to the sea. The Rainbow Spring and Mataranka thermal pool section of the Park are a major attraction. The spring water rises from underground at 30.5 million litres per day, and at a temperature of 34 Celsius is then contained in a relaxing swimming pool surrounded by a paperbark and palm forest.

The Park has a rich heritage. A little further south, in Elsey Cemetery, is the setting for the Jeannie Gunn's 'We of the Never Never'. Park activities include swimming, fishing, bush walking, boating, canoeing and camping. Ranger guided walks are occasionally available.
