Home to spectacular peaks, clear mountain streams & cool, crisp air, The Snowy Mountains make for an ideal holiday setting! Throughout winter there is run after run of smooth deep snow, providing an irresistible challenge to the expert as well as gentle slopes for beginners. However, skiing is only one attraction - the region is just as fascinating in summer. As the snow melts, the streams become torrents and green slopes & ridges appear; by January alpine flowers are covering the mountain sides. Summer attractions include trout fishing, horse riding, picnicking, golf, swimming, bush-walking, motor touring, riding chairlifts to the roof of Australia, & unlimited opportunities for the photographer. National Parks cover a fairly large area of the Snowies, including Kosciuszko National Park, the largest National Park in NSW & home to Mount Kosciuszko, Australias highest mountain at 2228 metres. Other parks in the area include, Wadbilliga, Deua, Namadgi & South East Forests National Parks.
When to Visit Snowy Mountains
Depending of what you’re after depends on when to visit the Snowy Mountains. Because of the altitude, the mountains are always around 10(°C) cooler than Sydney. The mountain environment also means that you must be prepared for adverse weather at any time of year. January to February is usually warm, around the mid 20’s (°C), and the alpine wildflowers are at their best. December & March are usually cooler. During the winter months of late June through to early October the mountains experience heavy snowfall and temperatures drop below zero, however the day’s are often pleasant enough to ski in reasonably light clothing.
