The rural cities of Wagga Wagga & Griffith are the largest centres; other major towns include, Cootamundra, Narrandera, & Gundagai.
When to Visit Riverina
The best time for visiting the Riverina is Spring when the temperature is mild. It can get very hot in summer and very cold during the winter months. July can produce some fine calm weather but temperatures usually drop sharply at night. If you intend going on any walks during the summer and autumn months, gaiters are advisable to protect against grass seeds.
Getting Around Riverina
The Riverina is connected to Sydney and Melbourne via the Hume and Sturt Highways and is approximately four and a half hours from both capital cities. The Federal Highway connects Canberra to the Riverina, and is approximately 2 and a half hours drive. Regional airports are located at Griffith, Narrandera and Wagga Wagga. Coaches also travel daily from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide stopping at most towns within the region. Trains run twice daily from both Sydney and Melbourne and stops in Wagga Wagga, Junee and Cootamundra. Public transport is readily available throughout the major towns but the best way to truly enjoy all that the region has to offer is by car.
